November means playoff football for Santa Ana high schools, and the city's own Santa Ana Bowl is one of Orange County's classic Friday-night settings.

Friday Night Lights: CIF Playoffs and the Santa Ana Bowl (Santa Ana Golden City News)

November changes Friday nights in Santa Ana. The regular season is over, the CIF Southern Section playoffs have begun, and every game from here on is win-or-go-home for the city's high school football teams. The bands are louder, the crowds are bigger and the football, played by teenagers under lights in the cool fall air, carries a weight out of proportion to the size of the stadiums.

Santa Ana's football tradition runs deep. Santa Ana High School, whose Saints are among the city's oldest programs, and schools including Mater Dei, Segerstrom, Godinez and Saddleback give the city a full football landscape, from nationally watched programs to neighborhood teams playing for their classmates. That range is part of the city's character: few places in California contain so many different kinds of Friday night within a few miles.

The city's signature setting is the Santa Ana Bowl, the stadium in Eddie West Field that has hosted local football for generations. A playoff game at the Bowl, with the stands full and the neighborhood around it alive, is one of the great grassroots sports experiences in Orange County, and generations of Santa Ana families mark their autumns by games watched there.

Playoff football also asks something of fans. Brackets in the Southern Section are large and travel can be long, so checking the week's pairing, site and ticket arrangements before Friday is worthwhile, especially for road games at unfamiliar schools. Bundle up, too: November nights at the Bowl cool quickly once the marine layer or a breeze arrives.

However deep any local team runs this year, the season's final weeks are a reminder of what high school sports do best: they give a whole city a team with its name on the jersey, and a place to gather on Friday night.
